Holiday Outings with Seniors--We can help!

The holidays are full of celebrations, parties, gatherings, and get-togethers. However, for an older frail loved one, holiday outings most often require a little extra planning--and sometimes a little assistance. Following these easy guidelines can help you and your senior loved ones more fully enjoy a fun and relaxed outing this season.

Before leaving the home, consider:

  • The quantity of walking involved, and whether there is parking nearby

  • If the destination is flat or has hills or stairs to climb

  • If there is wheelchair access (if appropriate)

  • Whether you'll be able to find cover and shade

  • Whether you will find toilet facilities

  • Whether there are chairs or benches available in the event the senior requires a rest

Be sure to prepare for a wide range of possibilities:

  • Have all the medicines needed and take an extended supply, just in case the outing lasts longer or takes an unexpected turn

  • Have appropriate clothing for the season, along with sun and rain protection

  • Have something to eat and drink, in the event of a delay

Need some holiday outing ideas that older adults will enjoy? Consider the following:

  • Take a leisurely family drive to look at the neighborhood holiday lights

  • If it's possible and received warmly, invite the senior to your home to decorate and then enjoy some coffee and holiday cookies together

  • Assist your senior loved one to attend a holiday celebration particularly for seniors at a local senior center

  • Attend local and community plays; aside from the local theater, symphony or ballet performances, you will find affordable shows performed at local schools

Whatever activities you participate in this holiday season, take things slow and create a relaxed environment to make sure your senior loved one is comfortable and happy, not to mention you. But if including your senior loved in an outing is impossible to do by yourself because of the fraility of the senior, we are available to provide companionship and assistance on that outing. Contact us for ideas on how we might assist you and make your holiday outing a truly memorable event with your senior loved one. Call us at 866-464-2344 to find out more.
